I ordered a bonsai starter kit from Yungen a while ago and have been waiting for the right time to start the process. I’ve emailed them a couple of times with some questions and they always reply quickly with in depth explanations and seem really knowledgeable and friendly, some of the best customer service I have come across. The kits come in a smart black box with everything you need and would make a great gift. Can’t recommended this company enough.

Started the process in August 2022, followed this as per instructions but no sign of any seedlings appearing. I’ve had some dialogue with Yugen Bonsai, their response is as follows, which I hope will be helpful to others. The largest and main issue that would be preventing your seeds from germinating would be the very low hours of direct sunlight. Your seeds need on average 12 hours of direct sunlight each day to germinate and begin pushing through. Natural tree seeds require different conditions to other types of seeds that might have been successful without direct sunlight. Indirect sunlight sadly doesn't give them enough energy to give them a kick start. Without enough energy to break through, the seeds can return to dormancy where the cold stratification steps would need to be repeated. This is likely the case with your seeds unfortunately. For an analogy, it would be similar to planting a tomato seed in winter when it needs at least 8 hours of sunlight. You wouldn't expect it to grow. I hope that helps make sense of the requirements. I appreciate that these long hours can be tricky to achieve especially in winter, however you can overcome this by using artificial growing lamps to help top up any missed hours. We often use these here in the UK as we don't have the appropriate weather year-round. There are a wide variety available online and at local garden centres. You can also wait until spring and summer with the longer days and plenty of sunlight hours. We also find that temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius is optimal for germination (68-86 Fahrenheit). If it is possible to keep the temperatures between these levels then you should have better results. Once your seeds sprout, they will thrive at slightly lower temperatures if you wanted to reduce the levels. I would suggest that the conditions required without artificial help are more or less impossible to attain in the UK. It’s a shame the average person buying this product wouldn’t be aware of what’s possibly required over and above the standard instructions supplied with the seeds. It’s my wife who I feel sorry for, she tried to find something different for my birthday and ended up wasting her money.
