Excellent educational place to visit, for kids and adults alike. We went with our kids many years ago and they loved it then, but didn't understand/grasp much from the underground tour. Now they're teens, they fully understand the tours and loved it even more. A must-go place to learn about our heritage and history. Free to visit, free to park, underground tours are free but need to pay fiver deposit per person for a miner's check, which you can return for a refund, or keep the checks and donate the money to the museum. We booked the underground tour online prior to going. There's plenty of other activities as well to keep the kids occupied.

What an awesome place to visit. Firstly, free parking (but you can donate £2 if you are feeling generous). Second, £5 to take the Caphouse underground tour (highly recommended). And finally, wander around the site, making sure not to miss Pit Wood, Pony Discovery Centre, onsite café, large children's adventure playground, blacksmiths (has some amazing wrought ironwork for sale) and at least another 20 attractions. Where can you get value for your money like this? I'll tell ya, nowhere! Another fine Yorkshire experience that won't empty your wallet.

What a fantastic place and a very highly recommended place to visit!! I was a bit dubious about going, but I was very wrong. The opportunity to go underground into the mine for an hours tour was excellent. The fact that ex miners were giving the tour really made it for me though. The passion and pride for the world of mining from our tour guide Gaz was clear to see. Adding to the facts with personal stories and experiences, as well as answering questions was such a fascinating insight into their world (one that you truly can't appreciate without going down there to feel the space and darkness). We were in a small group on a quiet day so at no point did it feel claustrophobic in my view. Fair bit of crouching to do if you're tall though as you would expect but much more open down there than I expected. Lots of other museum pieces to look at for free, a cafe and a kids playground too. Parking was free but there was a machine for donations. Can't recommend a visit highly enough for a glimpse into the world of the people who kept this country running for many years!

Really excellent day out for grown ups and kids alike. The underground tour is a fascinating insight into the history of mining through the ages and really highlights what dangerous and physical work it could be. Thoroughly recommend and the adventure playground is great for letting the children blow of some steam.
