A great find! We went on a Sunday morning and expected it to be busy as the weather was lovely but we almost had the place to ourselves! We had a guided tour and then went on the miniature railway which the children loved. The website says the train doesn't start running until 2pm but this is an error - it usually starts around 12pm and the driver let us stay on for 4 loops! The train is by donation and was longer than most we have been on before. Lots of places to sit and have a picnic and grass for children to play on and nice clean toilets. Would highly recommend. We were there for around 2 hours with children aged between 1-5.

A brilliant place to visit and a bargain. Lots to see from historic buildings, machinery, scenary and lots of very helpful and informative volunteers. We went with our 18month old who was able to toddle around. Theres also a ride on train run by the model engineers. You can pay by online payment or cash. A brilliant day or just a couple of hours.

Great volunteer led window on the past. Lots of fine machines including a mini steam train for the children. Good walks for dogs on nearby Transpenine Way.

Great volunteer run museum. This historic location has real potential and many things have improved over the years. It is run by volunteers and this can be its downfall, as many are better than others. Would recommend a trip though, especially if the railway is running.

Visited the Forge this weekend and was expecting a small building with a few exhibits. So far from what I expected. Working water wheels, steam engines, model ride on steam railway and amazing history being kept alive by volunteers with unbeleivable knowledge on the history of the forge, the machinery and local area. Had a 4hr visit that was only supposed to be 30mins and would have stayed longer if we could. A hidden gem.
