Rooms: Upgrade to garden view..good balcony and view over grounds. Walkability: Can walk into Colchester and lots of potential paths but a reasonable distance do most probably need a car.

We had a nice night over at Wivenhoe House Hotel. After being recommended to dine in the brasserie we booked a deal with the room booking. The service and food at the brasserie was atrocious. The restaurant was half full, so no excuses they were busy Staff were being shouted across the floor by the manager. Upon arrival they forgot to give us a menu. Starters we either cold or tasted too salty Mains were soaked it gease. Chicken barely cooked Table service was terrible. Cleaning the table of plates full of food there was no question as to why food wasn't being eaten. Multiple tables around us also complained about the food and service. Half way through the meal we saw a chef walking past with 2 huge bags of frozen chips. Walking thought the middle ofnthe restaurant. After waiting 8 years for our first night away free from kids, we have been sorely let down.

Nice accommodation and lovely staff. The food is really not very good though. Main meal was nothing short of miserly with portions that were smaller than the starters. All served on cold plates so what was there was cold in less than 5 minutes. Full cooked breakfast the next morning was completely cold, as were the plates. Who wants to eat solid sausages, black pudding and card-like bacon? I'd suggest people go out for their evening meal. Drinks were ridiculously expensive.
