FAQ

What is the history and significance of your pagodas?

Our pagodas were built in the early 1900s by the founder of West Dean Gardens, Edward James. They were inspired by his travels to the Far East, particularly Japan and China. The pagodas are significant because they represent James' fascination with Eastern culture and his desire to bring a piece of it to West Sussex.

There is a wide variety of flora and fauna that can be seen in West Dean Gardens throughout the year. In the spring, visitors can see daffodils, tulips, and cherry blossoms. In the summer, the gardens are filled with roses, lavender, and other colorful flowers. In the fall, the trees turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow. Visitors can also spot a variety of birds, butterflies, and other wildlife throughout the year.

What a beautiful place. Ideal for just wandering around the beautifully kept gardens. For the more adventurous you can do the circular walk up & over the hill. The views from the top of the hill are amazing, plus many beautiful varieties of rhododendrons in colourful splendor. We visited The Gardener's Tea room, the cream tea was delicious 😋.
