FAQ

What is the history and philosophy behind your Quaker church?

Our Quaker church, Walthamstow Quaker Meeting House, was established in 1902 and has been a place of worship, community, and social justice for over a century. Quakerism is based on the belief that there is something of God in everyone and that we can all have a direct relationship with the divine. We value simplicity, equality, integrity, and peace, and strive to live our lives in accordance with these values.

How does your church support and serve the local community?

Our church is an active member of the local community, and we offer various opportunities for people to come together, including weekly worship meetings, social events, and study groups. We also support a number of local charities and initiatives, including food banks, homeless shelters, and environmental campaigns.

What types of worship and ceremonies do you offer?

Our worship meetings are based on silent reflection and contemplation, and we believe that everyone has an equal voice and can contribute to the meeting. We do not have any set ceremonies or rituals, but we do offer opportunities for members to mark significant life events, such as marriages and funerals.

How does your church approach social justice issues?

Social justice is at the heart of our Quaker faith, and we believe that all people are equal and deserving of respect and dignity. We work to promote peace, equality, and justice in our local community and beyond, and we are committed to addressing issues such as poverty, discrimination, and climate change.

What opportunities are available for members to get involved in church activities and leadership roles?

We encourage all members of our community to get involved in church activities and leadership roles, and we offer a range of opportunities for people to do so. This includes volunteering for local initiatives, participating in study groups and committees, and taking on leadership roles within the church itself. We believe that everyone has something to contribute, and we value the diversity of our community.

Located in Jewel Road, this place is literally a local gem. Quite apart from the Quakers, rooms are rented out at affordable rates for violin and ukulele lessons, religious meetings of all kinds, yoga, card playing evenings and last but not least, the Forest Writers group. It even has a car park. One downside, very uncomfortable folding chairs in the room they rent out downstairs.
