We have returned from a great holiday and I would like to thank you for the hard work the team did for us. We had a wonderful time and this is largely due to Richie's commitment to showing us what a lovely country Sri Lanka is. He was committed to helping us explore and access temples, markets, etc and wonderful scenic views. and even finding us some of the best local restaurants we could hope for. His driving was exemplary and we were very pleased not to be driving ourselves. Richie is a great asset to your organisation. The hotels we chose were excellent although the Grand Udawalawe fell short of expectations and their ratings on trip adviser reflected this. But as we were only there for 2 nights it was fine. The Villa, Coconut Grove proved to be the icing on the cake and the star was Kumundu she was a great host and chef. The property was everything we hoped for and more. The wildlife in the garden was amazing, monkeys, chipmunks and lizards giving us a daily source of interest

Review of Escape-in-Sri Lanka My wife and I trusted this company, who say customer satisfaction is their priority, to arrange a 12 night holiday in Sri Lanka. They booked only our hotels (B&B) and a car with a driver-guide for a round-trip tour. They quoted just over £3000 so we expected good hotels in interesting and suitable places. We paid separately for our flights, all admission fees (sites, national parks etc.), and for all meals other than breakfast. So it was an expensive holiday. We had no knowledge of Sri Lanka, which is why we decided to use a tour organiser. The EscapeinSriLanka website looks professional and they claim special expertise. The first seven nights, in three locations, were satisfactory but the last five (of the 12) were very unsatisfactory indeed. For two nights we were put in a hotel 200 metres from Ella’s town centre and although it is in a beautiful part of the island, Ella itself is basically a backpackers’ town and full of loud music, garish lighting and dubious late-night cafes. As a destination it was entirely unsuitable for us, not having indicated to the tour organiser any interest in hiking (the main reason people stay in Ella), and being a couple in our early seventies. The hotel (BBQHub: see TripAdvisor review) gave us a tiny room with a transparent door to the wc/shower room and gaps round the door leading out to a tiny balcony. This, we assume, is where the cockroaches got in. The flue from a pizza oven below vented onto the balcony! A terrible place and evidence that ‘Escape in Sri Lanka’ does not vet the hotels they offer to their customers. The followed two nights were booked in a so-called eco hotel (The Saraii Village: see the TripAdvisor reviews which say it all). This place is genuinely awful. We refused to stay there and, with considerable time and effort from our driver/guide, we found other accommodation which – very reluctantly and only after several phone calls – the company paid for, but a whole afternoon had been lost. Our last night was spent in a good hotel but it was a 2-hour drive from Galle which is where our itinerary had specifically located it! We had time only to drive through the town which we had really wanted to visit. Deeply disappointing and a wasted last day of our holiday. On return we demanded a refund of £500 from the company for seriously messing up 5/12ths of our holiday. We were offered £200 by the Managing Director as a gesture, which was later retracted. The recurring response to our complaints was that any disappointments were our own fault because we had chosen our itinerary (1 of 4 off-the-shelf routes which we were offered) and our hotels (from 3 options which we were given for each location). We reasonably assumed we were paying (a lot) for knowledgeable expertise and a quality-assured experience, why else would you use a tour organiser??? From our point of view the main value we received from this company was being given an excellent driver/guide (an independent contractor to the company) who went beyond the call of duty to lessen the disappointments. We are very grateful to him. Beware of booking through this company. Seriously bad idea! Escape in Sri Lanka has an impressive website and they talk the talk of ‘customer satisfaction’. But the holidays are arranged by a couple of people in a London office who clearly haven’t tried or tested the hotels they offer to customers. There was no effort whatsoever to find out who we are and what might best suit our needs. There is no formal process for complaints. They are not ATOL-protected, so there is no come back. There are good reviews of this company. On Google, for example, there are a couple of recent 5* reviews (one, we note, from a Don Perera who shares his surname with the this company’s MD). And on their own website the overall satisfaction rating is close on 5* but take note that, of the 29 reviews to date, only 4 have been posted since January 2018 (15 months).

Excellent tour company. If you want to go to Sri Lanka, this is the company you must book through. Daniel provided us with a tailored trip, and he often went above and beyond to fulfil our special occasion requests. He was always available to answer any questions, make any changes and still provide value for money on the overall trip. Thank you so much for organising the best family trip to Sri Lanka.

February 2019 My wife's 60th Birthday a special treat. Booked 3 hotels finishing with 4 days yoga and relaxation. On the way to yoga and our final destination they inform us the hotel has been double booked. But not to worry we had been upgraded to a 4 star beach hotel. This was not the case the room was not fully decorated and was next to the Car park and adjacent to the road. Our representative thought this was o.k. we refused to stay there and we had to book another hotel elsewhere. This was totally unacceptable and we still have not received an official apology. Do not use this company. Jez Curtis
