A hidden gem. After coming to the Lake District for many years, we were unaware of Lowther Castle. What a find. The castle ruins and gardens so beautifully maintained and continued restoration is thoughtful. The hidden adventure playground was treat for my grandson. Great cafe. Above all, the staff were warm and welcoming, ready to answer any questions. We will return.

Fab family day out. The Lost Castle play area is amazing and keeps the kids (and adults) entertained for hours! Lowther Castle is not quite what it seems as it’s a ruin that is being carefully made safe but the grounds are what make it. Fabulous gardens, great views from The Terrace, great routes to go cycling, lovely cafe, stunning courtyard …. * Note to Lowther Castle - The only improvement would be more benches/seats dotted around the walkways around the gardens to appreciate the views and have a moments rest, not great for older relatives pushing themselves on a longish walk.

What an extraordinary place! Not a castle in the medieval sense but a magnificent 19th century stately home that is now a spectacular ruin. Came here on a day excursion to see the ceramic daffodils, but discovered so much more. We approached the castle along a very long drive through beautiful parkland. The staff who greeted us were helpful and informative, and we were given a useful free map of the gardens. There's an exhibition at the entrance, well worth a look because we learned a lot about the history of the Lowther estate and the family who have owned it since 1150. You walk through the ruins to get to the gardens. With their empty windows, soaring arches and crenellated towers, they are very atmospheric, and I got a real sense of how big and grand this castle was when it was lived in. The ceramic daffodils art installation was well worth seeing. The gardens are still a work in progress, but they were a delight to explore with their ornate summerhouses, rose garden and wonderful views from the West Terrace. The Lost Castle in the woods has enough walkways, slides and tunnels to keep kids happy for hours! Did not get time to visit the café in the courtyard but I bought a dandelion and burdock at the takeaway where you can get drinks, ice-cream, homemade cakes and snacks. There's also a lovely gift shop, clean toilets and free parking. Had a really enjoyable day out and definitely want to visit this place again.
