The Battle of Verdun was fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916 on the Western Front in France. It was the longest battle of the First World War and took place on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse. The tragic battle obliterated the landscape, with only one tree, a horse chestnut, surviving. The Verdun Tree in St Albans was one of 20 grown from conkers belonging to this solitary battlefield tree. It was planted here on 18 January 1976 as a memorial to the British, French and German soldiers who lost their lives in Verdun. The nearby bench is a lovely recent addition to this beautiful, natural memorial.
