Some lecturers are really kind and ease students into their course, whilst others are just poor teachers, but that is to be expected in most educational institutes. My problem is with the accommodation, as most of my friends and I had terrible experiences, eg. aggression from security members and noise concerns. All in all, it was not to the expected level university accommodations should be held to, as it fails to provide a safe and quiet environment for their students to excel. Outside accommodation proved to be the better option in some cases, weirdly enough. More detail about accommodation problems as below Charles Morris Hall had a number of issues that has made my stay utterly unbearable. 1. Noise concerns Firstly, The rooms themselves are not quiet due to some early design issues, you can consistantly hear people closing doors on other floors and the sound of the lift. Secondly, the shared bathroon concept is just flawed, as it depends on students being considerate and not slam doors during late hours, especially during weekdays. Jessica was returing at late hours (4am) and slamming the door. We were not acquainted so I seeked help from management and then when there was no improvement Adam Richardson, the warden. 2. Deterioration of mental health The noise level worsened since then starting Oct -Dec , Jessy later admitted she had done it to spite me, since then and instead of creating noise 3 times a week, Jessy did it on purpose on a daily basis. My schoolwork was disturbed to the extent that I had to write another email to the warden in Dec and I also started recording the noise for future reference. 3. No response from the Warden Since Dec-March, I heard no word from the Adam Richardson, so I had to take my own measures, filling the gaps in the door with tape to block out the noise etc. In Jan, after hearing the toilet door banging, it was the final straw and I retaliated by banging the door. 4. Neighbour aggression Since I began my retaliation, Jessy has assaulted me several times, chasing after me when I was leaving my room, and glaring at me whenever we met in the corridor (this girl was larger and taller than me). 5. Demeaning response from the Warden In March, I wrote my final letter to the warden and he decided we should have a meeting. From the meeting, a lot was discussed. In summary, He denied the fact that Jessy had started the noise and escalated the situation and I was equally to blame. The way he explained that conclusion was though Jessy had complained only in March she could have done this because she was more resilient to the noise from the beginning. He also said he could not tell if the recordings were actually her given it may be mixed up with other noises in the dorm. 6. Harassment concerns ignored The warden said he would not tolerate any escalations from either of us. However, Jessy was still making loud noises with her boyfriend and coming in late at night. Until, she finally moved in March, she kicked my door in the Jack and Jill before leaving. After the warden was informed, he didn't show any concern. More concern was shown when he heard that she threw something at her door to which he enquired whether the door was damaged. Overall, it was a horrible and expensive experience, it costed me study time and my grades suffered as a result. I would often hide out in the library, though it was extremely uncomfortable staying outside from 8am-11pm everyday during the winter. I would not wish this experience on my worst enemy. Hope everyone who reads this has better luck with finding accommodation! And if partying and late nights are your thing, definitely would suggest Charles Morris. No responsibilities and no consequences whatsoever.
