Never have blind faith in this Union. If you are an academic (teacher, lecturer) the U.C.U (aka Utterly Completely Useless) will only pay lip service to complaints of breaches of Employment Law and Policies. They communicate a lot but do little for their members nor academics in general; On a few occasions, local branches fought for their members and obtained results; But this is the exception than the rule. Academics are now doing more work for LESS pay, overworked, overloaded with admin. tasks, and even salesmen duties, regarded as Customer Service staff by students. All this happened under UCU watch. Chances are your complaint will go straight to management or HR; Your local rep. (hearing your complaint) will be a colleague working under your own line manager; Very disappointing. Do not expect a massive commitment from this Union. UCU is routinely congratulated and praised for its "cooperation" by senior management and Uni V-C; Says it all
