Like with any Travelodge, if you start with your expectations set at ‘cheap place to stay’, it’s pretty decent. To be clear, it is a pretty ugly tower which looks like it was pulled directly off some trucks and clearly hasn’t been cleaned on the carpark side. It has views of warehouses under construction and Hemel Hempstead. You’ll either be delighted or horrified to see Dominos, Subway and Toby Carvery on the ground floor. Reception and the breakfast/‘bar’ area is on the first. ‘Bar’ meaning 3 draughts (Guinness, Budweiser) and some bottles. But they are chill about you ordering in takeaway. The rooms are being upgraded to their new look, which is a few more fabrics and less plastic. The bathroom is clean, with a shower/bath but feels a bit like a plastic cocoon. Heating seems a bit warm but the windows can be opened. The TV is quite small (remember the room is cheap) and WiFi is decent/ only £3 for 2 devices for 24 hours. The ‘unlimited breakfast’ is the usual, with the fun addition of an apple/orange/water push-button machine that means kids can fill up their glasses - aka no being asked to refill for them as the jug is too heavy or tap too tight. And there is a coffee machine offering options, Lavazza / Wetherspoons style. It’s a great place to stay the night as a family, or passing through for work. Not somewhere to dwell but a solid sleep and filling breakfast.
