FAQ
What are the qualifications and experience levels of your instructors?
Our instructors are highly qualified with extensive experience in sailing and boating. They hold various certifications and licenses, including RYA Yachtmaster, Powerboat Level 2, and First Aid at Sea. We ensure that our instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and skilled in teaching students of all levels. What is the student-to-instructor ratio in your classes?
We maintain a low student-to-instructor ratio to ensure that each student receives personalized attention and instruction. Our ratio is typically 4:1 for practical courses and 6:1 for theory courses. This allows our instructors to provide individualized feedback and guidance to each student. What type of boats do you use for instruction?
We use a variety of boats for instruction, including cruising yachts, powerboats, and RIBs (rigid inflatable boats). Our fleet is well-maintained and equipped with the necessary safety equipment. We select the appropriate boat for each course based on the student's experience level and the course objectives. What safety protocols do you have in place?
Safety is our top priority, and we have strict safety protocols in place to ensure that our students and instructors remain safe at all times. All students and instructors are required to wear lifejackets or buoyancy aids, and our boats are equipped with safety equipment such as flares, VHF radios, and first aid kits. We also provide safety briefings before each course and monitor weather conditions closely. What is your cancellation policy for classes and what happens in case of bad weather?
Our cancellation policy varies depending on the course and the circumstances. In general, if a student cancels a course more than 28 days before the start date, we will refund the course fee minus a 10% administration fee. If a student cancels less than 28 days before the start date, we will not offer a refund unless we can fill the space with another student. In case of bad weather, we will reschedule the course for a later date or offer a refund if rescheduling is not possible.Reviews

By far the best sailing school experience I’ve had. As a female boat owner who had lost my confidence and enthusiasm to sail, I booked on a 5-day mileage and skills refresher / up-skilling trip. The help, supervision, professionalism, and wonderful attitude of my instructor (Tony) completely turned my feelings and confidence around. Sailing felt fun and anxiety-free for the first time in years. I’m now looking forward to heading back to get my own boat back off the dock! This is the only school I’ve come across that has a 3:1 student to instructor ratio as standard and this was reflected in the high quality of the service I received and the comfortable cabin. As an adult at other schools I’ve had to share cabins but not with TSS - this is a quality-orientated school. The more focused attention meant that I was able to run through all the problem-solving scenarios that I needed to and learnt SO much. I am very grateful to all at TSS for listening to my needs and goals and accommodating them to deliver an excellent and transformative trip.

Recently completed an RYA Competent Crew course over the second week of September. Mike, our skipper was highly proficient, knowledgeable and much fun to get along with. He is a very skilled instructor, who took the time and great care to teach us a great deal more than just the curriculum required for the comp crew level. The course had a 3 to 1 student/instructor ratio, which perhaps is the most ideal setting, as this allowed our instructor to devote ample time to individual students. The vessel was a well maintained 38' Dufour, which also added to the quality experience. The school also has a wide palette of courses and trainings to offer. So I would be happy to advance my qualifications with them. On all rounds, my expectations were far exceeded and I was very happy with my experience - top notch instructor, course and school! Highly, highly recommended!

Excellent own boat tuition provided by Duncan over a 2 day period. We really enjoyed our refresher training on our new boat and Duncan has given us confidence in having a twin engine boat for the first time. He was very easy to deal with and passed on lots of tips and advice which have been really useful, as well as guidance about the local waters and bays which we are now looking forward to exploring further. We highly recommend the services provided by Torbay Sea School.

My wife and I took part in both the Power Boat level 2 and VHF radio course as we are new boat owners. The instructors are excellent and no question was considered stupid and they were very patient with us and we felt very comfortable. The courses were very useful and have made us far more confident in using our boat both in and around the marina as well as out at sea. We woful highly recommend Torbay Sea School.
