Im a bit of a tea fanatic and when I go to LDN I spend a fair bit on tea as I dont have these shops in my area. Normally £100+ to stock up (not to seem arrogant). I was in the tea house and was picking out a variety of teas to purchase. I have asperger’s syndrome, my partner has asthma in which she has to use steroid inhalers, and my friend I was with is autistic high functioning. We are all officially exempt for obvious reasons. When the person serving in store asked us to wear masks we told him that we were all exempt. In return he rolled his eyes, huffed and said sarcastically so all 3 of you are exempt. This was incredibly embarrassing for anyone let alone when 2 of the people it was aimed at are severely socially handicapped. This literally ruined are day and put my friend into an extremely negative mind set. Clear example of why you should approach the topic of exemption with caution, it can impact someone’s already damaged mental health even if you think your sarcastic comments wont. The store was packed and made us feel incredibly looked down upon for being 3 people with disabilities out together. Are 3 people with exemptions not allowed to be friends in your eyes? If they are then why feel the need to blatantly discriminate against them in a store full of people? To put them down? To make them feel worse about themselves? To make them feel on edge all day when it was meant to be a special day out for us all? If so well done, you achieved it all. I swiftly responded to the man in question that I have asperger's syndrome if he needs to know but dont feel I should have to justify myself to prevent the horrible attitude that was given to us and really knocked us back.
