  • G I

Since early childhood, I had major speech dysfluency which affected every aspect of my life, including personal relationships, professional life and my general day to day life. Simple things like asking for directions, speaking on the phone and ordering a cup of coffee was always a daily struggle. In classes, I often kept quiet the whole time and kept out of group discussions because I was terrified of embarrassing myself in front of classmates with my dysfluency. As a result, I had very poor self esteem and low confidence in myself. I had tried multiple therapists and specialists when I was younger but they yielded little to no change. However last year, I decided to start treatment with Rebecca and she was vastly different from all the previous therapists I had gone to. She had a very structured treatment plan for me and used a variety of methods to help me improve my fluency. For instance, she would record me speaking and play it back to me so we could analyze it and see how to improve my speech. She also helped me develop a number of techniques to better control my fluency, including breathing techniques and being more attentive to my speech in order to catch the dysfluencies before they happen. I could tell very early on that Rebecca was 100% dedicated to my treatment and I never left a session thinking she was neglectful. She was very attentive to every detail of my dysfluency and addressed them in the most efficient ways. One of the most difficult parts of speech therapy is applying what you learnt in the session to your everyday life. This was something I had always struggled with but Rebecca had a plan for that. Once she was confident that I had grasped the basics, she would take me outdoors and have me speak to random strangers on the street, asking for directions or other miscellaneous topics. After approximately a year into therapy, I have noticed astronomical improvements in my fluency. I am now more confident to speak in front of groups and giving my opinion in discussions. I no longer feel anxious when asking for directions or for a cup of coffee. These may seem like minor events but these were all challenges that haunted me everyday of my life and now, I could do them as easily as everybody else. I remember an instance in one of our sessions where I had doubts about my improvements. Rebecca then showed me an old recording of me speaking a couple of months ago in a previous session and the difference was like comparing night and day! I am very grateful to Rebecca for helping me reach this stage and I highly recommend her to anyone suffering from speech dysfluency.

After my husband John’s second stroke left him with aphasia (something I knew very little about) and additional cognitive problems, and after being told nothing more could be done for him, I felt desperate, so after investigation found and contacted Rebecca, and it was the best move I could have made, not only for John but also myself. Rebecca came and explained John’s problems in detail and how she could help. She gave us hope which we badly needed. She started with both cognitive and word understanding, helping John to understand the basics again, and week by week he started not only understanding words but putting them together to form short sentences. Rebecca explained every step of the way to help us understand what she was doing and how it was helping in John’s improvement. She gave me support and showed how I could continue with John’s recovery between appointments. She is patient, kind and we are very lucky to have found her, and cannot thank her enough for all the help she has given us.
