I use Saleroom to search for items, which I then bid on/buy either directly bidding with the auction house, or I use a different auction platform if available, like EasyliveAuction, because it can be considerably cheaper. Saleroom's fees are ludicrous and have increased through time. If they were less greedy I would still use them. They also lost most of my previous purchases some time ago, so it isn't like the premium you pay is going towards a premium customer service. Many auction houses seem to have worked out that they can cut out Saleroom and save their customers money by running their own platforms, so it is worth checking if the auction house you are bidding with does this.

Please be aware that the following review is about a specific auction house, rather than about Saleroom that acts as a market place for various auction houses. Ainwick Auctions advertised a specific item, a “Seiko Bullhead watch” at their 08/05/2023 auction. The item was advertised as “almost mint” as a representation of the standard of the watch presented. I bid accordingly, leaving an automatic bid representative of the market value of an “almost mint” condition watch of this make and manufacture. I won the auction lot at the highest end of my bid and took possession of the watch the following week. Upon receipt it turned out that the watch was a “Frankenstein” made up of non original to the item parts. The watch also does not work, which in my mind seemed very much to contradict the assertion made by the auction house. When I contacted them to ask their take on the issue, they advised me that their reference to “almost mint” referred just to the aesthetic quality of the watch…..despite this distinction not being made at the time, only when I challenged them on the voracity of their advertising. For many items…coins, bank notes, comics, watches…to name just a few, a designation of “almost mint” has a very specific meaning and attests to the quality of the product being sold. That this point is lost at this auction house should act as a warning to anyone considering doing any business with Ainwick Auctions. Imagine buying an “almost mint” example of any car that you can imagine, paying in monetary terms the value of an “almost mint” example of said car, only to find it had no engine….only to be told that the seller only meant it looked nice from a distance??!!?? Saleroom for the most part seem to deal with reputable professional auction houses, but clearly on this occasion neither of those terms could or should apply to Ainwick Auctions.
