Finally making progress, despite harsh criticism (to which I can't respond even harsher seeing as its my review, I'm not paid enough for these btw.) from the reluctant local council. Staff are nice and everything is quieter now than it had been. Improvements have been made to the place, and we have actual wildlife in the garden that is friendly.

My Mother spent her last few weeks in Poplars and I could not be happier with the care she received. Everything was documented, everything was reported to me and patiently explained. Regular updates from nursing staff and caring staff were given to me on every visit. My Mum could be difficult to deal with because of her condition and I can not imagine that any other home could have displayed more patience or more determination in the face of these difficulties. I can not express sufficiently my gratitude to everyone involved in the care of my mother. Despite her condition and sometimes challenging behaviour they strived to improve her life. At the very end, mum was very peaceful and seemed content and she died peacefully in mid October. The other residents I met during visits to my mother also seem happy and I could hear laughter most days from residents as they interacted with the staff.

Mum has been a resident of this nursing home since Dec 2020, when she moved in with my severely disabled Dad. She was bedbound, doubly incontinent and unable to do anything for herself. With the staff's patient support and care she is now walking with a zimmer frame and is able to feed herself and take herself to the toilet. Dad passed away a year ago and the care the staff gave to him and me was exceptional. They are a brillant group of people, polite, caring, supportive and always keep you well informed. I am so glad Mum is so well-cared for, it gives me great peace of mind.

On the basis that you get what you pay for, and bearing in mind the the local authority pay around £700 per week towards patient care at Poplars - and that generally you'd be looking at around £1100 plus per week for private care, I think it's fair to say that you really do 'get what you (or they) pay for'. Clean yes, grounds beautiful - but staffed mainly with staff whose first language (or culture) isn't English, who can and do 'not understand' when it suits them, whose spoken English vastly deteriorates when using the phone but similarly improves when talking 'in person' - our family have massive regret about placing my Aunt in their care. No help with communication with Auntie during Covid, no help to use hearing aids, no help with charging of her mobile, TV control beyond reach - absolute bare minimal assistance, choice or interaction - and even that seemed grudgingly given. We tried getting answers from management team - non responsive - the more we asked, the less we got. Phillipa Baker (see comments below) Business Admin, was excellent but actual questions directed to Home Manager were ignored and answers never given despite a hugely difficult to arrange meeting at which she didn't even have our Aunts basic details and file. My Aunt wasn't an easy person - but at 'end of life' one would have expected that to be taken into consideration - she was 'wound up', taunted and teased, and a wall of silence surrounded those responsible. Foul language and shouting by some of the male residents caused my Aunt, who'd never been exposed to it before, real shock and fear. Yes, some staff are attentive, caring and sweet and I sincerely thank them - but it's the minority of moody bullies/dominant characters that rule in a 'closed environment', so think very, very carefully - don't be fooled by the care and empathy so profusely shown by Manageress.... once your relative is in the home, all that drops away. Comments made via Facebook were immediately 'hidden' by their FB Admin - and that says it all ... I've waited many months for my anger and sadness to subside before writing this. Please think twice!
