I was one of the earliest people through the door after it opened. Not like going to a hospital or clinic. First thing was to answer any question, remove the fears, no matter how silly. Just sitting in reception knowing we all were there for same reason. More visits meant you could talk to first timers, hold hands with total strangers, help take away fears. A magical place of caring, help, and guidance. Made so much difference to so many people. Stopped so many from going blind, or losing a foot. A magical place. God bless them. Jonathan Ryan.

At 2 years old I was diagnosed with diabetes. When I was 5 we moved to Ashford and I was cared for by the Paula Carr centre. When I was young the Paula carr centre had the best diabetes care outside of london. In the late 2000's I noticed the quality of care massively decline and my last few visits to my endocrinologist were not in the paula carr centre but in the main hospital. Over the last few years I have struggled to keep myself healthy as my average blood sugar levels have steadily risen. A lifetime of multiple injections a day have left me with scars all over my body which prevent insulin absorbing properly, look horrible and when you have to inject 2-3x the amount that you should...it hurts. Suggestions from my doctor were impractical and not useful, and I always got the feeling she didn't really care and thought it was somehow my laziness. I always felt she would suggest things that were helping out her statistics, rather than my health. New technology came on the market a few years ago which help monitor your sugar levels and, despite not having any money, would buy them when I could. This greatly improved my health, and became available on the NHS but despite meeting all the critera I was initially refused the treatment. I now have moved hospitals and have a much better doctor, my average sugar levels are now that of a healthy non diabetic without any highs or lows (5.5 a1c). I believe the paula carr has suffered terribly from funding cuts that began its decline coupled with some apathetic doctors. Diabetes UK says that every diabetic should have a diabetic nurse but i had not seen one in years.
