This is a superb local for the locals. The beer, what I sampled of it was A1 and the food, what I saw of it (for other tables) seemed great. I would not advise having too many sherbets if driving as the roads here are truly tretchorous. The Carpenters Arms in Felixkirk is nearby and also worth a visit. We stayed here in late April. Our room was in the annex which is directly opposite the Owl. I am not fond of annexes but in this case the room was really good and quiet, unfortunately the heating was poor and hence the room was rather cool. The owl itself is really great, comfortable bar area and a very nicely done dinning room. We had dinner on the Saturday and the food was excellent, the Owl doesnt do evening meals on sunday, sunday lunch only (until 5pm) so we ate as late as possible. The meal was very good and plenty of it, possibly too much. The beef was really good, a large thick slice. Breakfast was standard, which for a hotel at this level was a bit disappointing although the food was good. Service was great, friendly staff keen to help but like so many places there are staff shortages although it was never a problem for customers Overall a great weekend

This hotel is in a great location, very quiet , with some lovely local walks available. We booked a 2 nights stay, with Dinner on both nights. We found the food to be very average and expensive, £25 pounds for lamb shank, £13 pounds for 3 small scallops, £18 pounds for a cheese board ???? The wine we had was lovely at £26 a bottle,, and a great selection of real ale is available, with a smashing real fire, very relaxing. Our room 4, was very small , and needed some maintenance, we asked for another towel and we were told it would cost more money ? This is most unusual and not acceptable. The bar closes around 9 pm, and last orders circa 9 pm also, this is very unusual and not really acceptable for guests, previous reviews have also mentioned this. The breakfast was small, and way over cooked, dry black pudding , over cooked egg, dry beans, measly portion, no milk on the table and no sauces either, and also no breakfast menu ?? Why ?? This hotel could be excellent, they need to offer a better standard of food, and reduce the food prices, and open the bar for longer on an evening please.
