With everything going on with Covid 19, my antenatal classes were cancelled and so I researched online to find something to help prepare for labour, birth and after. I came across Ellie and the Maternity Collective after recommendation from a friend who really thought the course was much more detailed than what she had experienced through the NHS and so I contacted them through the Instagram page to sign up for the free Covid 19 classes offered. I have to say after going through the course, it is far superior to what the NHS offers. First of all in terms of depth of information and detail. Full explanations are given into the biology and physiology behind labour and birth, including hormones, how to stimulate natural production of hormones to ease labour and positions. Secondly, for the advantages of processes during the golden hour - they are well explained and clear to understand, something the NHS just skims over and said your midwife will talk to you. Great if you can see one but I’ve not met mine! Thirdly for breastfeeding - having had a mastectomy and reconstruction at age 30, it has always been on my mind about my ability to feed if we were to have a baby. It was considered way back when I discussed reconstruction options and I chose to preserve my one remaining breast and wouldn’t let the surgeon touch it to try and keep my options open. In the first part of the breastfeeding section, I was instantly reassured to know that it’s perfectly possible to feed with one breast, and it came from a reliable source - music to my ears! Lastly, it’s hard to find information that’s unbiased and I’m one of those people that needs to understand how things happen and how I can help myself. The team even help engage partners and include subtle references to hypnobirthing trying to ensure a more natural, easier labour and birth. I’d really recommend this course and really feel every woman should have access to this. As a first time mum going through my first pregnancy, during a pandemic, this has helped me feel empowered and well informed to make the right decisions for me without seeing a midwife, who ordinarily I would have seen multiple times already but have yet to meet! Well done everyone at the Maternity Collective. Congratulations on building such an informative course! Thank you!
