When I approached Ged at the Luminor Sign Company I was emotionally navigating the breakage of a piece of glass inset into a circa three metre tall Victorian mahogany screen. I originally found the glass locally to where I lived in Clerkenwell in 1990. It was found on top of a skip in Exmouth market EC1 and was painted tangerine orange. I have been carrying it carefully with me ever since until such time as I found somewhere tall enough to use it despite a crack down its left side. It was a part of my history. It had even travelled internationally and for a period of two years remained in storage in Cork city. My move to Ireland had to be aborted but I reclaimed the piece. Fast forward to the accident, the screens appointment with fate just prior to taking its place in my wife and I's newly refurbished kitchen. Tall ceilings in an Arts and crafts period house facilitated its pride of place. My workshop partner had a moment of distraction and the screen fell and the glass shattered. I was bereft. Fast forward to 2022. I spoke to a few glass artists and felt Ged had the right stuff. A few months passed whilst my turn for fabrication came round and today I drove up with my workshop wingman Laurence and collected the piece. I hoped my tracing, sizing and multiple photos along with a sample of breakage would give him enough to work with. The lettering, gold leaf on black enamelled glass with the words; 'The Home and Colonial stores' had a particular nuance to its blocky lettering. When I saw it in the shop all the character of the original was right there and I just stood there stunned. In fact I was so happy I was a little lost for words. I made up for it by a little too much digression even by my standards. Great quality work from a business keenly aware of what is needed by the customer and a fundamental understanding of aesthetic,(I already have another idea for another wee commission). I owe both Ged and the very affable Dubliner in the shop,(sorry for the lack of a name!) a great pint and some seaside vittles if they make it down to the South coast. I will send you pictures of the glass fitted within the week. I am beyond excited. Do I believe in heaven?, yes I do and it has a glass like quality. I should know, I've seen the signs! We needed to replicate a signage we have to take off during some works in a shop. Luminor Signs responded so quickly and were able to accommodate our short time frame and install it within a couple of days. Moreover they recreated it perfectly, by doing a hand drawn stencil and the final result was beautiful! Very happy with their work.
