Down a little farm track on a Doddinghurst backroad is one of my favourite shops anywhere… the Hardwood Offcut Shop. Now, by way of full disclosure I’m a certified, card carrying wood nut. I build and repair guitars for a living, and make furniture and other wooden things for a hobby. For someone like me, this place is an Aladdin’s Cave. I’ve bought all sorts of timber here, including white oak, wenge, iroko, figured utile, mahogany, maple, bits of bowling lane (also maple) and high quality birch ply, and turned it into everything from high sleeper beds and guitars to bird boxes and workshop jigs. I’ve also just hung out chatting - Tim (the owner) is a great bloke, really amiable and also very knowledgeable both about woodworking and the timber he sells. Be warned, if you’re a wood nut too, this place can be dangerous - there’s so much choice at low prices, you’re almost guaranteed to buy more than you planned. I’ve found the best way to protect yourself from this is to start with a good budget, give yourself a couple of hours to browse, and take a big motor to bring your haul home.
