Sadly, this hotel was rather disappointing, especially for the price we paid. The first thing you need to know (that is not listed on their website) is that there is no elevator and the stairways and hallways to the rooms are quite steep and narrow. We were traveling for a few weeks, so had quite a bit of luggage. We asked if they could have it sent up (mind you, we were four flights up) and I gave up after 45 minutes of waiting and took care of it myself. It’s ok to not have a lift, but you need to clear about that up front and offer real solutions to mitigate the inconvenience. And then there were the other problems. There was no phone in the room, so no way to call down to the front desk without using your own phone and incurring international phone charges. None of our power outlets worked, despite thorough troubleshooting, so we couldn’t charge our phones, or put the water on. The walls were paper thin. The TV didn’t work. The thermostat didn’t work. The shower and toilet were unimaginably small. Far too many things were inoperable for a $350/nt hotel. The positives? Despite the issues, the staff were kind and tried to help. And the location can’t be beat. You are within striking distance from kings cross. And then there’s the decor. Personally, I found it to be way over the top and bordering on tacky. I felt like it played for the photos, but in real life, it was a bit much considering how small the whole space is. But that’s just my personal taste. Personally, I’d spend my money on a brand hotel that is a known quantity after experiencing this disappointment. The hotel might suit a weekend traveling couple with little luggage, but this ended up being a terrible choice for international guests.

My husband and I stayed at the Gyle for our final night of our vacation. The hotel is in a good location BUT we had some major issues with their customer service and electricity. Most importantly, the Gyle offered us a full refund (on their own volition) and then never processed the refund or responded to our emails or travel website emails. Very deceptive practice. Issues: (1) The website does not clearly advertise there is no elevator. We were on the 3rd floor. We asked for assistance taking the bags up which they said would be taken care of. An hour after waiting we found them still sitting in the lobby area so my husband made multiple trips to bring them up. For many people this would not be feasible. (2) None of the electricity plugs in the room worked. We talked to the reception team and they tried to flip some switches but ultimately this meant that we had no ability to charge or use any electronics during our stay. (3) When we realized there was no electricity in the room my husband spoke with the night manager. After they realized they couldn't fix it, the night manager offered a full refund for the evening. In the morning we confirmed the refund with the receptionist who said their manager would take care of processing it since we booked through a travel website. After our return we sent two emails to the email address they told us to use to confirm the refund was proceeding. When we didn't get any response, we contacted the travel website we booked through and they said they would take over processing the refund. After 2 weeks they said they tried multiple times to contact the property but were unable to get confirmation. The irony is we didn't even ask for the refund, they offered it and then reconfirmed it before we left. For a $400 hotel room we expected some basic service and electricity....very poor service and would not recommend based on our experience.

Rooms: Very clever and interesting design and details plus really comfortable beds and lovely pristine sheets Safety: It felt like a safe quiet oasis from the madness of London streets… Walkability: Very close to Kings Cross St Pancreas with lots of restaurants, great for Scottish train travellers making connections… Food & drinks: We only had breakfast but it was one of the best nice fresh generous breakfasts I can imagine…and lovely friendly helpful staff Noteworthy details: Fascinatingly detailed design features and extremely helpful friendly staff. A very impressive experience that we will be delighted to repeat…thank you all

The room they gave us had some electrical issues..BUT the willingness to fix the issues and the to relocate us to a better room shows how good this hotel is. Things can go wrong in any hotel but it's the care taken to fix issues and attention to this is how you really measure a hotel. Well done to THE GYLE. And the location and quality of rooms is fantastic. Thank you
