My wife and I were fortunate to get a table for her birthday. As a local myself it was wonderful to enjoy world class cuisine in a friendly and uncomplicated Cumbria pub, perfect. Sandra looked after us without any intrusion and the whole experience was like visiting good friends for supper but with incredible talents in the kitchen. Couldn't ask for anything more. A real Michelin quality gem

The D&G is about 6 miles/15 min c£20 cab from Penrith in the quiet village of Skelton. It's mainly a restaurant but has a bar, sells ale by the pulled pint so can also be taken as a pub and there a couple of tables at the front where I imagine a lazy summer evening can easily be passed. Service and food were excellent. Unfussy and friendly service from the whole team. You can chose 3 courses from the longer tasting menu and that's what I had. The short cocktail list included a very good white negroni (gin, elderflower liqueur, Pernod). The meal: delicious home-made bread with butter and a Romanesque dip for the table followed by curried crab cake and then a delicious suet venison pudding served with chips and a delicious thick slice of roasted beetroot. It was a deep and tasty dish. Dessert was a millefeuille. The wine list was short but good value and included a very decent white and red from Switzerland.

Visited Tuesday 2nd May ~ food is really nice quality. We thought it was a little over priced but we’re happy to pay it. We had two things that we found a bit irritating. Firstly we had to wait 50 minutes before having any bread, and then when it was time to exit the time taken to bring over the card machine seemed like an endless wait. Hmm, mixed bag - we felt the service was missing the care and attention that should accompany a high end experience.

The food is fantastic. We went for my wife's 60th birthday meal and it's worth every penny, especially considering the quality. Good atmosphere too- feels like a pub and not a snooty high end restaurant. Only one slight mis step with the service, meaning we waited a long time between starter and main, but otherwise the team are fabulous. We'll be back!
