The sculpture, unveiled in May 2019, is of three black footballers who played together for West Bromwich Albion from the late 1970s. Back when racism was open and rife, it was unheard of to have so many black players in the starting eleven. Cyrille Regis, Laurie Cunningham (both now sadly deceased), and Brendon Batson were nicknamed The Three Degrees, after a pop band of 3 black women which was successful around the same time. Cunningham and Regis were both capped by England. Cunningham was the first ever British player signed by European giants Real Madrid, and the only one for 20 years until Steve McManaman. All are hailed as pioneers, and this statue is majestic. Great likenesses and an iconic pose. It was unfortunately delayed by 5 years due to funding issues, which meant Regis sadly passed away without seeing the finished piece.

this memorial remembers Cyrille Regis MBE, Brendon Batson & Laurie Cunningham (aka The Three Degrees)... it's best summed by the only surviving member Brendon Batson: "The statue isn't just about the three of us, it symbolises the journey that we are on as players in that era, but also all the other black players in that era that had to show a lot of resilience as well, so I think it is a tribute to all the black players, no matter what the generation. I think people can come along and see, those who have never heard of us, will be able to look us up and see what it was all about and why that statue was put in place"...
