Stopped here by chance avoiding congestion on a1(m) and found a real gem. Good food, good service and good wine. We stopped for a quick lunch and ended up having an enjoyable, relaxing pause on our journey. If you're in the area, definitely try them out. The welcome at the Castle is best described as 'meh'. Sometimes it's luke warm, sometimes it's far frostier. It's as if staff are being held at gunpoint to work there. We've been regularly since it changed hands but it has consistently failed to come even close to it's sister establishment The Square & Compass where you are greeted with genuine warmth. In our opinion it's best described thus, 'if there's no where else go...'

Thursday lunchtime, pleasant ambience, very good service and food tasted good and fresh with well prepared ingredients. Sticky toffee pudding divine though at £7 I’d expect it to be great. Only 4 stars because it’s way too expensive especially for lunch. I had maple roasted butternut squash with rocket and seeds. Total cost of ingredients less than £1.50 if I made it at home and I’d have added some haloumi. Charged £14! My friend had onion bhaji burger and chips. It’s onion bhajis in a burger bun. £15! If you want a sandwich it’s ciabatta at about £10. Also veggie ciabatta fillings - blue cheese & fig or butternut squash - sorry but neither appealed as sandwich fillings. We were in the comfortable pub area with my dog and the tables are of a good dining height. Castle Inn I’d love to visit regularly for lunch but not at those prices nor with the repetitive ‘choice’ of too much blue cheese or squash for vegetarians.
