We came here a few months ago with some good friends. Because of the company we were in, we thankfully had a really good night. Unfortunately, we had a polite concern about the £80 amarone we requested. The sommelier (a french gentleman) was without a shadow of a doubt the rudest man I've ever come across in a restaurant, and I mean ANY restaurant. His conduct was so close to ruining our evening, and it would have done had we not have been in such good company. I can't remember much else about the evening unfortunately - the rudeness of the staff overshadowed what I'm sure was a very good supper. We walked past last night after supper and, presuming it would be a no, decided to pop in on the off-chance we might be able to enjoy an aperitif in the lounge. Let me first say that I expected it to be a no and we were popping in just to check. Unfortunately we were confronted by the same rude sommelier who literally laughed in my face and showed me to the door. As I said, I presumed our request to drink without dining would be politely declined but I never expected to be laughed at. Once again, this gentleman has tainted my evening in Ilkley. Thankfully the second time I wasn't about to pick up a dinner bill for £600. I have to say, the service is a huge contributing factor to someones dining experience and I will not be returning. I much prefer the Angel at Hetton - for both the food and the service. Such a shame but it goes to show the impact of one bad staff member.
