I love food but would not describe myself as a foodie. There's no doubting the effort and inventiveness that has gone into the preparation of the dishes at The Barn - not that my endorsement is needed given that this restaurant has a Michelin star. This was my first experience of a Michelin-starred restaurant. Being honest, I am more of a street food kind of a guy; I appreciated this food rather than loved it. I am sure many foodies will disagree and tell me I am wrong but I can only be honest. The service here is fantastic and worthy of the visit alone - attentive and yet unobtrusive, I cannot think of a time when I have had better service. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, and the prices are competitive (post-cost of living crisis I have overpaid for a number of meals, this wasn't one of them). I thoroughly enjoyed my trip and would recommend Barn to all open-minded non-foodiea such as myself.

The location is lovely, with attractive buildings, a lake, and a pleasant terrace area. The service was very attentive, though there was a fly in one of the glasses of wine they poured from a bottle we ordered, so they tipped it away (understandably) but as far as we know didn't replace it. The food was excellent except for one vital thing - it was way too salty throughout. Salt should be used to gently enhance other flavours but here it overwhelmed them in every dish. I was with people from various countries and we all thought it was too salty. It could just be that English people like it that way (I've never had this problem fine dining in France, for example), but for me it's a big culinary faux pas. I also found it very noisy, which was made worse by the quite loud music, which gave the venue the feeling of a boozy night out rather than a classy restaurant. Lastly, there were no vegetarian options, which on an à la carte menu seems very backward. It's a shame as the food is actually really great, it just gets drowned out by the salt and the loud noise!

We went for lunch in the barn, a set 3 course menu which had 2 choices for each course and on paper, had promise. So as it was only the two of us, we had all options. Unfortunately, it was woeful. Although the staff were great and the venue impressive, the food lacked flavour. We left disappointed, hungry, a few quid lighter and heading for MacDonalds! Giving the benefit of the doubt, it was probably a one off, but we won't be returning!
