After retirement, with a little more time on my hands, I decided to enrol in this History of Art course, a subject that had always interested me but I knew little about. What a wonderful experience it has been! I have thoroughly enjoyed every module, even those periods of art history I initially thought I was less interested in. It has really broadened my tastes and interest. The course materials have been prepared to a very high standard, directing me to further reading and inspiring some gallery outings. I even enjoyed the written assignments and looked forward to my tutor's feedback, which was always timely, insightful and considered. I took the full year to complete the course due to rationing myself to only one module each month and will miss the excitement of each new module, but I fully intend to access the additional modules and revisit some of the earlier ones. I cannot recommend it enough. I have learned so much, and my family love visiting art galleries with me these days to hear about what I know!

The course has far exceeded my expectations, and I am sorry to have come to the end of this excellent journey through the history of western art. The modules are well written and presented, and the assignments are thought-provoking. I have enjoyed the challenge of saying something interesting in 250 words, and the prompt and succinct feedback is both helpful and stimulating. My appreciation of artworks from the Renaissance to the present day has increased immeasurably, and my artist husband and I now spend happy hours discussing his portraits in the light of my new knowledge. He actually listens to me now! Thank you, and can we have more Advanced Modules, please?

This is my first online course, and I have never regretted starting it. I found the course very enjoyable and interesting and now am confident in having sufficient knowledge to appreciate and understand the evolution of Western art to a far greater depth than I anticipated. My tutor Libby Anson was very friendly and helpful and always returned my work promptly with plenty of constructive comments. Of course, each module has required sufficient time and study to gain the satisfaction I now feel. The whole experience has left me knowing time has been well spent. I'm now keen to pursue further research, study and opportunities to view art as recommended in the "where to see" lists at the end of each module. I'm happy to recommend the course to anyone who wants to learn about Western art at home in their own time.

I can't recommend this course more highly. Written by specialists in their own field, easily readable content, gorgeous photography of artworks and really interesting questions to sink your teeth into. Each module asks you to complete 3 questions and submit them online in a very easy process, and with a very swift turnaround by the fabulous tutors, you receive a mark and excellent constructive feedback. Each module is like a standalone course - there is very little doubling up of course material, and the whole course together constructs a very interesting account of world history blended with the art of the time. The Facebook group is wonderful for asking questions, sharing opinions and encouraging, and Student Support is very efficient in handling any queries. I have loved every part of this course and am sad to have finally finished.

f you love art and want to know more, sign up for this course. The staff are helpful and encouraging, the tutors are excellent, and they are sympathetic to those whose skills of writing assignments in a limited number of words are either non-existent or rusty, and the ability to interact with other students on Facebook is a bonus. So many times, I have wandered into an art gallery and have felt overwhelmed and slightly out of my depth because I did not always understand what I was looking at. I certainly didn't appreciate modern art. This course opened my eyes and broadened my understanding, and filled the lockdown months with hours of pleasure. It can be hard going at times, but fellow students often have useful suggestions, and there is office support when you need it. I hesitated at least three times before signing up - and all I can say is I am so glad that I did. At nearly 80, I took the course to keep the brain active and not for any other purpose, but I am sure it would be helpful if you were thinking of developing a career in the arts or progressing to further study. Now, go for it!

I was hoping that this course would help convert me from being somewhat philistine and a lifelong technocrat. It has certainly achieved this aim. I now have a far greater interest in, and enjoyment of, art as a result of the course. My intention now is to continue, in retirement, with further learning. It has taken me some time to get through the course due to conflicting time constraints (no fault of the course), and I have found the work challenging yet enjoyable. The modules are generally very well written by experts in their particular field. The subject matter of each of the modules has been carefully chosen. The order of the modules is ideal, with the inability to move to a subsequent module until each has been successfully completed. My tutor, Stephen Farthing, has provided superb feedback on each assignment, occasionally inspiring me and often improving my confidence when this has been waning. I am more than tempted to buy one or two of Professor Farthing's books to further enhance my learning. I now look forward to visiting as many of the course listed galleries that I can, when permitted to do so in these Covid times. The whole experience has been very rewarding and, I believe, a catalyst for further learning and enhanced enjoyment of art.

I loved this course - each module is well written by accomplished art historians and visually exciting. As a mature student, I had some reservations about studying again and taking on a new subject - but I found the course quite accessible, extremely interesting and enjoyable. I also found it quite challenging, but my tutor was always encouraging and provided prompt, very informative feedback that was very motivating. I would definitely recommend the course.

I am a retired pensioner in my late 70s, and I have successfully completed The art Institute course on Art History without putting myself under any unmanageable pressure. It has, at times, been quite challenging, which is what I was looking for. The modules are all very well written, and my tutor has questioned my response to the assignments when needed but always in a constructive way. I have a life-long interest in art which this course has enabled me to explore at my own pace and in my own time, expanding my understanding and giving me a context for my own practical artwork as well as the ability to look with hopefully more learned eyes at the art on gallery walls.

This is a wonderful course, ideal for all gallery visitors who have seen a painting blossom to life before them as they read their crib sheets. I have learned more than I would have thought possible when I started a year ago. The course scope is broad, and one of its great strengths is the enthusiasm it can kindle for art previously passed swiftly by. The course is very efficiently run and marking always prompt. My tutor Libby was the absolute tops; she was full of praise and encouragement and good at suggesting where an argument was vague or skimpy without making you feel a complete chump. I would recommend this course very highly indeed.
