This seemed like a worthwhile project so I signed up and was taken on. The vetting process was slick and efficient. Safeguarding training was very useful and welcome. I spent a lot of time brushing up on the GCSE Maths curriculum. The project uses a bespoke video/whiteboard Web based system for which there was an hour's video training but no chance to gain practical experience. So, when I was paired with a student, I felt very unprepared. The first tutorial was a disaster but the student and I muddled through. He was a really nice lad with plans to be a doctor. I asked for some practice with the teaching interface. The only reply was "watch the training video again". My main contact was unresponsive. Even before my first tutorial, every week I was sent an email from a sales management package asking what I had delivered. That summed it up in the end. The student and the volunteer didn't matter. It was all about the numbers. Just my personal view as a former volunteer. Four weeks later - I've uprated my review as it has been positively received by the project. It seems there is a tutor support structure but unfortunately I was not made aware of it. I very much hope that the project reacts positively to my many suggestions.
