Fantastic Dojo. Friendly atmosphere, very helpful and courteous instructor with clear and easy to follow instructions. Etiquette and discipline is how you would find at a Japanese Dojo. As someone who has been training martial arts for a number of years, I feel I have finally found a place that is more concerned with the outcome than the income. Youll learn more than just how to use a sword and start to see there is a whole other aspect to the art. Its fascinating to learn of the Samurai mindset which is very different to western thinking and personally I feel that we can all learn a great deal from Eastern culture/mindsets. Lessons are always interesting learning the various ways of the sword. Whilst some reading these reviews think that its a waste of time since from a legal viewpoint youre not allowed to be walking around with swords, they are missing the point. There are many things that are transferable to real life situations and how to deal with them accordingly. However, since you are reading these reviews, clearly you are on the right track. Come along to one of the lessons and give it a try. Its challenging, fun and educational. All students are friendly and Sensei Stuart Knight is knowledgeable, understanding, patient and very welcoming. Everything you would expect from a Samurai. Ignore the 1 star review from the "ninja biker". He was a student who had issues with self discipline and etiquette.

Coming from another dojo based in Croydon visiting Tenshin Yodokan was nothing short of an amazing experience. I have such high respect for not only for the teacher, but also the students as well. A very welcoming place which I can see myself coming back to in the years to come.

I am Sensei at the Yabane Yodokan Dojo, in West Wickham. I have trained regularly for years with Sensei Stuart Knight. I can attest that he is a highly skilled, very knowledgeable individual, who lives his life very closely to the 7 Virtues of Bushido. I have visited the Tenshin Yodokan Dojo on several occasions, the last time, a couple of weeks ago. I had the honour to assist Sensei Stuart in his lesson. I am able to say that Sensei's students are a great group of people. They are very respectful, open-minded and eager to learn. Such a well-run dojo can earn nothing but praise and I have no hesitation in recommending it to potential students wishing to learn Tenshin Ryu Iaido, Iaijutsu, Kenjutsu and kobudo weapons.

If anyone has a yearning to expand their knowledge and hone their mind and body, in a nice atmosphere, and enjoy their time with such friendly people along with a great teacher, Sensei Knight, then look no further. This place has helped shape me in a way I never thought I knew I could, going from feeling unbalanced and a little clumsy to feeling like a strong person (with a good sense of balance) and being more at ease and confident in my body. Highly recommended to anyone who doesn't just wish to learn martial arts and the way of the Samurai, but to also feeling like a stronger person both in mind and body, this is the place to go.

Highly recommend this dojo to anyone. I am new to martial arts and despite this i have been welcomed in and made to feel part of the group since day one. The training from sensei knight is done in a very clear and precise way to make sure that everyone of all abilities understands and progresses in there own way. Great fun, and very rewarding!

Tenshin Yodokan is a rare school which I am proud to be apart of, teaching traditional old style (koryu) Samurai martial arts & the way of budo, since I found this school I have never looked back, growing each time in martial skills also in character & spirit. Within & outside the dojo the ethics of budo is within everything we do, also learning about the sword, weapons, culture, the history & samurai of japan. Sensei Knight is a great teacher & has always shown such passion & respect for the arts, his guidance, patience & knowledge is something hard to find within martial arts community.

Absolutely shocking how bad this man will treat you if you already have some knowledge of the Japanese sword. If I could give less than 1 star I would. If you're looking for total disrespect from the "Sensei" then by all means join this Dojo. If not then go ANYWHERE apart from here!!!! Edited. The response from the owner is a lie. There was not an issue with space as when I started there were about 5 people. Now there's far more. He also accused me of things that were just not true, Do not trust this man! Oh and its not bad etiquette in this review. It's just the truth.

As a martial arts instructor with 48 years of training and teaching in the Essex area, I had a full-time health and fitness gym in Basildon for 20 years I am very particular about who and where I go to learn. I did some research and was extremely fortunate to find Tenshin Yodokan and Stuart Knight. I have been training as one of his students since November 2021. I have found the classes informative, disciplined and fun. Stuart is an excellent instructor with a wealth of knowledge. I am a 6th Dan in Karate and a 2nd Dan in Japanese Jiu Jitsu, I also teach Filipino martial arts and still teach classes in Basildon. My credentials speak for themselves and I highly recommend this club and Stuart Knight who is the instructor. If you are interested in learning a traditional Japanese martial art that is based on the teachings and the etiquette of the Samurai, you should join us. I fear we will need a bigger hall.
