I was very disappointed with the length of mulberry I bought for a furniture commission. There were many shakes hidden within the piece and it seemed to have had the life kilned out of the timber to such an extent that it made the stuff incredibly brittle and almost unworkable. I've had a fair amount of experience working with air-dried mulberry before (and it works lovely) but this piece I bought from Surrey Timbers was a totally different experience - so much so I seriously question whether it was Mulberry at all, and perhaps something like Robinia (also given how straight-grown it was) In the end the timber was assigned to the scrap pile - I'm a professional furniture maker and joiner so have little time to be messing about with bad timber. Including delivery to Suffolk, the piece cost me just over £163, so not an inexpensive experience and certainly one I regret.

Good variety but it wasn’t cut square and lots of cracking. Over a 1m length it went from 140 to 135. For the price I wouldn’t expect that.

My order just arrived. Why oh why do no other timber yards appear to do what Surry Timbers do? Hobby packs or box making timber planks! Ordered 3 thin padauk. Big enough for a small box. Bought 3 planks. Thanks to Matt Estlea for the walk around which really helped as I have no idea what I'm doing. I ordered the wood with the hope at some point, making a nice box with it. Will be practicing on scrap wood first. In Worthing and asked a local yard I know that cut wood to order "Do you do hobby packs. Small planks for just making boxes". I was told "No, you probably won't find any yard that does that". How wrong they were. So thankfully we have Surrey Timbers that do. Shame I don't live closer as I'd have visited instead of doing the delivery. All arrived fine and well packaged. I didn't take a great photo of the planks but you get the point.

I've been a hobbyist woodworker for around 10 years, and in that time I've always struggled to find a local timber merchant that sold a good variety of hardwoods at a decent price...until now! I've no idea how I didn't find Surrey Timbers earlier, as they're only about 15 mins away from me. Fortunately I saw a Matt Estlea video on YouTube where he visited them, so headed over to take a look for myself. The prices are all very reasonable. Of course it's more expensive than picking up a piece of warped pine from one of the big chains, but it's considerably cheaper than anywhere I've ever found online. Less than 40 quid for a 1500*160*24 piece of American Walnut is an absolute steal. Also bought some African Rosewood and Sapele which were similarly well priced. No cracks/warps/twists in any of the pieces. Staff were great too. Hands off until we needed help, but also easy to approach and more importantly they knew their stuff. Will definitely be coming back here for any wood I need in future.
