I today visited and walked around the Strensall Rifle Range. The Strensall Rifle Range is situated within the Strensall Military Training Area and is situated behind the Queen Elizabeth Barracks Strensall. To get to the Ranges you need to get to the village of Strensall which is 4 miles north of York. Go past the Six Bells pub at the mini roundabout in Strensall. The road you need to be on is signposted for Flaxton. You have gone too far and missed the correct turn if you reach the Golf Club. On the road to Flaxton on the right hand side just outside of Strensall, you will see a lane to drive into. It has an MOD sign at the entrance to the lane. Turn right onto this lane. At the Giveway sign turn right. The car park is on the left hand side. There are information boards and maps detailing the Strensall Training Area at the car park. Walk onto the road and walk straight on. Go through the wooden gate past the cattle grid and follow the road as it corners to the left. Before you get to the Cottage and the LandMarc site on the right hand side you will see a gate. Go through this gate and follow the path lying between the Queen Elizabeth Barracks Strensall and the Strensall Rifle Ranges. As you walk along this path you will see a gate on your left. Go through this gate and that is you on the Strensall Ranges. Warning number 1: You can only enter the Ranges when the red flags are down and/or no red lights are on. If the red flags are flying and/or the red lights are on YOU CANNOT enter the Ranges as live firing is taking place. If there is live firing taking place the access gate at the Cottage is locked. You can also hear the live firing taking place at the Ranges. There is an information board at the side of the road before you get to the cattle grid detailing the live firing days and times for the week. It also details the days that dry training is taking place. The information board also gives you the telephone number of Range Control and the Range Officer. If in doubt about access to the Strensall Rifle Range phone these numbers. But note that the lines are only manned when live firing is taking. Once on the Range there is a road to walk along. It runs from the Range Control building at Range A all the way to Range F. There are six ranges at the Strensall Rifle Range A to F. The road is part of the Strensall Military Training Area Permissive Rural Walks and the public can walk along this road when no live firing is taking place. Note: The public are not allowed on the Range areas themselves. The permissive rural walks road runs between the shooting bays near the front of the Ranges and the shooting bays at a further distance at the back of the Ranges. I entered the Strensall Rifle Ranges today at about 2pm and left at 5pm. Warning number 2: Watch out for adders! I encountered two adders today. One within the Range area itself and one on the road on which the Cottage lies. The adders are more frightened of you than you should be of them. If you wait for a while they will move on into the undergrowth. The adders come out when it is hot and sunny. If it gets cold later in the day the adders sometimes cannot move so fast. Do not pick them up! The adders are more of a danger to small dogs that rummage through the undergrowth than humans. My walk today around the Strensall Rifle Range was a most enjoyable experience. I would recommend a visit to the Strensall Rifle Range. I am going back to visit the Strensall Training Area on Saturday 21st May.
