  As a headstone is the last earthly act one undertakes for a parent, some are able to just get on with it, but I was not. It took me several starts, but together with the genius and flair of Fergus, I was able to establish exactly what I wanted, and he created a masterpiece. It is a true word of art.   When faced with the heart-breaking decision of commissioning a memorial headstone for my late husband I knew what I definitely did not want for him. We both had found it sad that inscriptions on so many headstones in our church cemetery were no longer legible especially on the granite ones. One evening after John’s death, I stopped to sit on the bench that he used to rest on during walks. It was then I noticed facing me two or three rows away a very striking headstone, the unusual colour, material, and hand carved text calling me to approach and read. I knew without doubt, I had found what I did want for my husband’s memorial. It took time to find the creator of this headstone – multi award winning designer and stone carver, Mr Fergus Wessel of Stoneletters Studio in Oxfordshire. I was unable to travel to his studio, but telephone conversations and emails made it clear that while he unstintingly provides any guidance asked for, he considers the input of the client’s thoughts, wishes & ideas, to be most important. His calm and patient manner and encouragement to take unlimited time in deciding on wording and design instilled confidence that to commission the work with him would be a sound decision - and it was - and I could not be more pleased. My husband’s beautiful grey-green ‘Cumbrian Green Slate’ memorial now stands out among all the granite in our churchyard. Most importantly for me, I take comfort that long, long after I am gone a glimpse of this lovely headstone will beckon passers-by to come and read and discover a little of the character of a good man who forever will lie in our peaceful and pretty cemetery. My sincere appreciation – and admiration - to Fergus and his team, wife Hannah Wessel, James Sheppard & Tom Wiggins for the contribution each made in the production of John’s stone.

  We can't praise Stoneletters highly enough. Commissioning a headstone was a daunting task, but Fergus and his team turned it into an uplifting and joyous experience, from the prompt and compassionate response to our very first query to the meticulous care taken in erecting the finished headstone. And what an incredible headstone it is! As well as being one of the nicest people we've ever met, Fergus is immensely talented and has created an outstanding work of art, an astonishingly beautiful masterpiece that stands beneath a cherry tree in a quiet country cemetery and celebrates Gillie's life with a few exquisite, flawlessly carved words.
