We had been hunting for the right carpet for our stairs on and off for more years than I care to count. It's so hard to find affordable bespoke runners. And then we came across Stonegate Carpets in Leeds. Our first encounter was with Shelley. We sent her photos of our stairs, our rug on the landing and our stained glass window. She made up some wonderful samples for us - it was like having our own personal interior designer. She has an excellent eye for colour. Stonegate are incredibly quick to respond to emails and are very helpful, not to mention patient! After quite a correspondence we made our decision and we now have our beautiful stair runners installed. Stonegate appear to have a unique service. They can make up runners by joining together different high quality carpets, doing all the cutting, joining and whipping of the edges in house. Between the team they carry years of experience in the carpet trade. We needed slightly different widths for each of our staircases and everything came to the precise measurements. With our measurements they calculated exactly the right amount of carpet without a site visit. I requested an underlay that was not foam based and this too was supplied. As we are local we were able to use one of their fitters and his work was impeccable. We give them top marks. Thank you Stonegate.

I planned to buy and fit a stair-runner myself - my debut as a carpet-fitter. The people at StoneGate Carpets deserved better than having to encounter such an obsessive tenderfoot such as me. Not only did their high-quality stair-runner beat the local price of an inferior product, they answered my plethora of DIY questions with infinite patience and knowledge. Another excellent point is that, none of my local carpet shops supplied ready-made runners - only floor carpets which would have to be cut up to make a runner. Then, that runner would have to be overlocked on each edge - at extra cost. Another major disadvantage locally is that no-one offers to add a border to the runner. I'd share the photos of the finished job but I'm allergic to boasting, probably because I'm the most humble person in the world.
