I have completed my introduction to climbing, placing protection, learn to lead sport and most recently learn to lead trad with Steve. He is a highly skilled professional teacher and delivers high quality training sessions always going above and beyond. Steve teaches the fundamentals of climbing in a way that anyone can understand and teaches progression in a safe and controlled environment. I will continue to complete all my climbing courses with Steve as I feel I have personally progressed through his teaching. I have also completed mountain skills 1, 2 and MS assessment with Steve where he has taken me from not being able to read a map to locating check points with a compass and pacing. Overall Steve is a brilliant teacher and of course makes learning fun and enjoyable along the way!

Having done my Mountaineering Ireland mountain skills assessment with Steve in July 2022 I was very impressed with his approach to mountain training which ended up with me taking Steve as my trainer for Mountain Leader(ML) trainings 1 & 2 in October and November respectively. Steve is very knowledgeable in all aspects of Mountain Leader training, which is delivered to a very high standard, thorough in his approach to safety on the mountains and with him being a rock climbing instructor you are getting the best possible rope work for ML. The trainings are very enjoyable and rewarding and above all good fun with lots of laughs at the right times. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend Steve for Mountain Leader training.

I am from California and scheduled with Steve to take me climbing during my trip to Ireland in the fall of 2022. From our first communication on, Steve was professional, informative, and friendly. I felt very comfortable scheduling with him. So we had a particular date in mind but as the date neared, it was going to be rainy on that day (and for most of the days during my trip!) However, Steve was able to accommodate me on the one sunny day available. We changed our date and the location from Malin Head to Cruit Island and he even sent another guide to meet me so I could follow them onto the island and not get lost. I did several single-pitch climbs and a multi-pitch climb as well. Steve was really fun and of course very safe on the climb. He even took the time to teach me how to belay from above, something I haven't done before. The scenery was absolutely stunning. It really was the highlight of my trip. I highly recommend Steve if you are looking for a climbing guide in Ireland.

Look no further for a provider than Steve. His professional, knowledgeable, and affable approach to training outdoor skills is rarely matched. Steve took me through my mountain skills and mountain leader courses with a laser focus on my personal capability development to meet the mountain leader assessment requirements. His confident and assured, yet relaxed, style meant I was able to immerse myself in the training with the learning experience consequently just good fun. On my mountain leader assessment it was soon clear I was one of the better prepared. The leadership, rope work and navigation challenges were less daunting than they may otherwise have been without Steve’s guidance. The testimony to Steve’s training was ‘one of the strongest passes we’ve had’ to quote my assessor.

Booked in with Steve on a guided route round the cutting edge on Malin Head. I had climbed before but was still quite a novice so was looking to refresh what I had learnt previously and at the same time, tick off a classic route. Steve was able to tailor the climb fantastically well to what I was looking for. We successfully climbed the ridge and he was able to incorporate a lot of skill sharing throughout the day for areas such as climbing techniques, equipment, rope work, as well as courses to try next to help me progress further. Both him and Jo were very friendly and easy to talk to. Would highly recommend him as a guide for a great days craic in some fantastic settings!!

I have recently completed my Mountain Skills 1 & 2 with Steve Hodge Mountaineering and had two fantastic weekends. I have done a lot of hill walking using trails and have not previously had the confidence or skills to go off the beaten track. The level of teaching of Mountain skills was so high and well delivered to meet the needs of all individuals in the group and a great atmosphere was developed within the group. I learnt so much but at the same time had fun and loads of laughs while feeling totally safe out in the hills. Thanks to Steve and Jo I have the skills and confidence to go off the beaten track using a map and compass. I've already set dates with Steve to do my Mountain Skills assessment and can't wait! Highly recommend!

I had a 1-1 RCI refresher course with Steve which was my second course with him. He took time to understand areas I needed to revisit and his ability to create a session to accommodate everything was great. His wealth of knowledge and skills compliment his approachable and friendly nature.

My daughter and niece have been learning rock climbing with Steve Hodge for two years now (age 9 and 13)and I have nothing but praise for the whole experience. Steve tailors the experience for their ability levels ensuring they both fully enjoy the climbing and have challenge to develop their skills. I couldn’t recommend this enough for any age who wants to try rock climbing.
