One of the distinctive landmarks of London St. Pancras is the beautiful statue of the British poet and literary critic Sir John Betjeman. For me it is always a must to stop by the statue, if only to escape the crowds.

A lovely, possibly over the top statue of the poet Sir John Betjeman. It has him standing in a pose, wearing a mac, holding on to his trilby and looking towards the sky. During WWll, St Pancras Station sustained damage, and the plan was to demolish the station, and replace it with a modern concrete design, a bit like nearby Euston Station. Sir John Betjeman campaigned against this and his involvement helped to secure St Pancras Station wasn't demolished and redeveloped. Well done John!

Statue unveiled in 2007 by Betjeman's daughter at the inauguration of the Eurostar service from St.Pancras station. An irreverent but touching Interpretation of a comically disheveled and portly Betjeman with a shoelace undone and windswept raincoat. Appropriately staring at the very same cavernous and magnificent surround he had vociferously and tirelessly petitioned to preserve over so many years.

If you are passing it's a reminder that after the station was damaged during the war the 'plan' was to knock it all down and rebuild at pancreas as a modern concrete building John betjemen campaigned to keep it which is why we still have this beautiful building today

Betjeman was one of the most energetic figures who, in the 1960s, fought the destruction of St Pancras - mercifully unthinkable today. Standing on the platform is a larger-than-lifesize statue of poet John Betjeman by Martin Jennings. Betjeman had been the driving force behind efforts to save the site when it was threatened by development plans during the 1960s and the sculpture stands as a tribute from London and Continental Railways to the man who made their redevelopment of the station possible. The completed work was jointly unveiled on 12th November by Betjeman's daughter Candida Lycett-Green and Poet Laureate Andrew Motion. Around the base of the statue are carved lines from Betjeman poems, chosen by Jennings, including: "Here where the cliffs alone prevail. I stand exultant, neutral, free,/ And from the cushion of the gale. Behold a huge consoling sea."
