I brought a boat which came with a survey completed by Star Line Boats. The Survey stated: " Both Sides Over plated with 5mm plate, the average 4.6 to 4.9mm thickness " Recently I had the boat surveyed by a competent surveyor and the boat was actually OVER PLATED WITH 4MM NOT 5MM. Meaning the AVERAGE thickness is 3.9 NOT 4.9. Be very careful who does your survey!!!

Spent several months at Boot Wharf whilst fitting out our boat, at first we were really happy with both the service received and the atmosphere of the place. After a couple of months we got to witness some pretty negative things. It became apparent that Tony the owner of the boat yard was very good at over promising and under delivering, A couple came to the boat yard to have some work carried out by Tony and his team, the job took months longer than it should and by the time he had finished the price had increased considerably. The lady of the boat was just short of 80 years of age and at one stage they were left without running water for weeks! and then they were asked to pay dry docking fees for being there even though the job had been dragged out! By the time they left they actually had essential items missing from there boat where they hadn’t been put back on. We found the owner to be a very dishonest person, he lied to ours and other people who were dry docked faces several times knowing that we were stressed and needed to know answers about the upcoming changes that were happening. He said that we wouldn’t be effected yet suddenly went on holiday the week that the changes took place to avoid dealing with his customers. We made the mistake of recommending his boat building services to friends, unfortunately they had already handed there money over to him before the issues started to arise, they’re boat took longer to build than agreed, windows were cut to the wrong size. They ordered the windows through Tony and they took that long to arrive that when they chased the issue up with the supplier it turned out that they had never been ordered and that Tony had spent there money on another of his unfinished projects. They’ve also had to wait for the engine that they paid for and the blacking is coming off even though it had been done within the last 12 months. There seems to be a theme with how work is carried out at Boot wharf, jobs are dragged out and are not done to the standard that you should expect.

Star Line Boats quoted on some work to replace a gearbox on my narrowboat and clean my engine bay. This wasn’t a straightforward change as the engine bay was full of grease and water (which they knew about) when quoting. It was agreed that they would tow my boat back from Hinckley to Nuneaton to do the repair. If it couldn’t have been done satisfactory the job should never have been started. Getting this boat repaired was very important as the boat was pending sale at the time. The repair was bodged, the gearbox fell off whilst cruising. If the work couldn’t have been completed to a satisfactory standard it should never have been done. Initially we had problems when we got around 5 miles down the canal, we called Star Line who was happy for a technician to meet us at Hawkesbury Junction who came over who checked over his work and tightened a few things up. I am a boat novice but the gentleman who came along wasn’t and could tell something wasn’t quite right with the work. The boat appeared to be OK, until we cruised further along and the gearbox fell away from the engine completely. It was obvious something was wrong as I paid just over £1,500 getting this replaced. If it was to satisfactory standard this wouldn’t have happened. The boat was then moored up whilst trying to get this resolved, after contacting Star Line they weren’t very enthusiastic about sorting the problem. I sought legal advice, threatened legal action and an independent report and this is when they admitted the bolts used to affix the gearbox weren’t the correct ones. Star Line came out to correct the bodged work and it was OK, but for what I paid I did not expect this type of service from what I thought was a ‘good boatyard’. I think it was clear here that the job was rushed, not what I expected from Star Line and if you’re thinking of using them I hope you read this review to cast your judgement.
