It is thought that St Peter's Church existed in the Saxon era but can be dated from the 11th century, the south side was added in the 14th century and the tower added to the west end of the church in the 15th century. St Peter's is a Grade 1 listed building with the chancel and nave being C11th. In the C14th the south aisle and also probably the west end & tower rebuilt. The south chapel dates from C15th whilst restorations continued up to the C20th. There were originally only 4 bells, 2 of which were made by Miles Graye of Colchester and dated 1657. in 1922 this increased to six and recently brought up to 8. in the 1880s the Revd. Ellacombe a west country vicar, designed a mechanism to enable his trusted churchwarden to ring all the bells. The mechanism became popular and known as Ellacombe chimes. A set was fitted to St Peter`s in 1908 and is still maintained in working order today.
