St Nicholas' Church, Berden is a small well kept Grade I listed church, partly dating to the 12th-century. Although so old, it is probably the most comfortable and relaxing church in which to sit and contemplate I have found in visits to hundreds of churches in Essex, Lincolnshire, Kent and Sussex. This might partly be because of its simplicity, gentleness of light, and superb interior proportions. This church is featured in Pathé and other newsreels detailing the ceremony of the 'Boy Bishop'. A slab near the altar is to Dame Mary Scott, who, through three marriages, climbed the social scale and outlived her husbands. A celebrated local murder is remembered at the east of the well kept churchyard where a tombstone marks the grave of a parish constable killed in an 1814 robbery. The churchyard is frequently portioned off to provide localized grass habitat for wild plants and insects. The church and yard is pleasantly secluded from the village. Well worth a visit if you are in the area and would like a spot of quiet reflection.

The building is cruciform shaped with indications in the nave of a Norman origin. This church exemplifies Early English style of the 13th century.
