Many times I’ve driven along the A127, heading to Southend to visit family. I’ve long noticed this little church in the distance to my left and have for a while been drawn to it’s remote distance. I finally took a left and headed to see it. It was a little tricky to find, I came across it rather suddenly, and that just added to the aura. I parked my car and left the 21st century far behind. Stepping onto the little gravel path that leads to the church I could feel the years slip away, the swirling eddies of time seemed to shift and move with liquid ease about me. As though through some distant lens I was momentarily transported into a quiet tranquil peace, the traffic, distant and softened into melody seemed far far away, even the birds were calmed and I felt wonderfully alive: I had stepped out of my life and into another world. Those precious 20 minutes were a momentary bliss, nothing can fill me with such restful peace and tranquility as when visiting such beautiful old English churches. This little corner of Essex is quite precious, this little church many lives away from where I stood to admire the tumbling headstones mixed with grass and ivy, the telltale signs of age upon age, many winters and summers have come and gone, leaving their mark. No doubt I’ll never be back as life flows in other directions, taking me with it, but this church will remain in my heart and etched into my life fabric, now forever a part of me, for that I’m truly grateful.
