St. Mary's is a traditional style village church, sited at the very centre of Ardleigh village, on the main crossroads. The churchyard is quite small, but has some interesting old gravestones & tombs. The church itself is built from very well proportioned stonework, with an elegant clocktower. However, it's the interior of St. Mary's that's most striking, with extensive wall decoration as well as colourful stained glass windows. The wall murals are especially ornate in a style quite untypical for British churches, but much more alike Russian or Greek Orthodox churches...

The church can be dated back to 1135, and indeed many of the recorded Vicars go back to 1237! The present building dates back to 1460's but major rebuilds took place in the mid to late 1800's. The very picturesque tower houses eight bells making the octave weighing up to 1500 lb or 675 Kg, the heaviest of which was cast about 1420. The church is open to view and well worth a visit.
