The Church of St Mary the Virgin in Wendens Ambo is a Grade I listed building. A stone church existed on the site when the Domesday Book was written in 1086 but it is likely a wooden structure was there before this. The tower is the oldest section, typically described as Norman. However, the round window openings are typical of Saxon churches and may predate the Conquest in 1066. Typical for the area, the construction is rubble and flint topped with the characteristic Hertfordshire spike. The current structure is a mix of ages but features fragments of 13th century wall paintings, a 15th century brass and rood screen and a medieval font. The stained glass is a mix of Victorian and an interesting modern window too.
