FAQ

What types of gardening tools and equipment are available for use at your community garden?

At St. Mary's Secret Garden, we provide a range of gardening tools and equipment for use by our community gardeners. This includes basic tools such as shovels, rakes, and hoes, as well as more specialized equipment like wheelbarrows, pruning shears, and watering cans.

How is the community garden maintained and who is responsible for upkeep?

Our community garden is maintained by a team of dedicated volunteers who work together to keep the space clean, tidy, and in good condition. This includes tasks such as weeding, watering, and pruning, as well as larger projects like building raised beds and installing irrigation systems. We also work closely with local authorities to ensure that the garden is kept safe and secure at all times.

Are there any restrictions on what can be grown in the garden?

While we encourage our community gardeners to be creative and experiment with different types of plants, there are some restrictions on what can be grown in the garden. For example, we do not allow the cultivation of any plants that are illegal or toxic, or that could cause damage to the environment or other plants in the garden. Additionally, we ask that gardeners respect the space and avoid planting anything that could be considered offensive or inappropriate.

How often are community events held, such as workshops or social gatherings?

At St. Mary's Secret Garden, we hold a range of community events throughout the year, including workshops, social gatherings, and educational sessions. These events are designed to bring our community together and to promote gardening, healthy eating, and sustainable living. The frequency of these events varies depending on the season and availability of volunteers, but we aim to hold at least one event per month.

Is there a fee or membership required to participate in the community garden?

There is no fee or membership required to participate in our community garden. We are committed to making gardening accessible to everyone and believe that everyone should have the opportunity to grow their own food and connect with nature. However, we do encourage our community gardeners to volunteer their time and skills to help maintain the garden and to support our community events.

Excellent community facility that had eluded me when I lived there a while back. If I am being picky they aren't looking after some of the planting that we'll but as it's been the driest July for many years it's not a surprise. If you're in the Haggerston area find this for yourself.

Lovely unexpected find just down the road from the much better-known Geffrye Museum (aka Museum of the Home). Inspiring undisciplined planting, places to sit around, lots of affordable indoor and outdoor plants for sale.
