I don't always agree with Simon Jenkins on the inclusion of some churches in his book 1000 best English Churches, but this one deserves its entry. The setting is fabulous to start with. The approach to the church shows off the tower which looks like a patchwork of various building materials. From the churchyard there are views across the river Stour and Manningtree. But the mastery in the carving of the chancel cannot be excelled. From outside the window tracery is different in each of the 8 chancel windows, all intricately carved in different patterns. The brickwork is black and white chequerboard or stripes. Inside the carvings on the arches of these windows is intricate and detailed with flora and fauna. Squirrels, Owls and many other leaves and beasts. The last window on the North side is covered in acrobats, men cavorting and dancing in all sorts of poses. Luckily it was quite bright on the day I visited, but it was still difficult to give these windows due consideration in the photographs.
