St Mary Magdelene's Church in Monkton, Kent, is a Grade I listed church dating in parts to the 12th-century. Although the church, raised above Monkton Street, is of historic interest, I found it, and its churchyard, rather uninspiring, although there are two listed table tombs. However, some details around the church in this linear settlement are of some interest, to me anyway. The cast iron churchyard gates with elaborate fretted gateposts next to the unlisted but charming row of churchyard cottages, the village stocks, war memorial, weatherboarded barns, and a walk along a wooded farm track accessed through the churchyard wall at the west, are in close reach. I visited in August 2016, and witnessed from the farm track a spectacular barn fire, which drew me to the village from miles away - Google satellite today shows only the remaining empty plots. Like Josh Tilley I found the church interior closed, something I've found common for churches in Kent.
