SS Stockport was a steam powered North Sea ferry of 1 ,631 tons built by Earle's shipyard of Hull in 1912 for the Great Central Railway In 1923. Her ownership was passed to the London and North Eastern Railway and in 1935 to Associated Humber Lines. On 11 August 1937 SS Stockport was damaged during a Collision in thick fog with the Hull steam trawler Lady Beryl. In 1941 SS Stockport was commandeered by the Admiralty to become a convoy rescue ship. Her job was to pick up survivors of Royal Navy and Merchant ships which were victims of U boat and air attack. She was converted for her new role with survivors accommodation, an on board hospital guns, radios and more fuel storage for long Atlantic voyages. Her Merchant Navy crew were joined by a Royal Navy contingent including medical staff and a gun crew and communication specialists.
