The lock and bridge are lovely and the carpark is just a stones throw away. However, the area of canal up towards Rickmansworth has long term moorings, and some of the boats are in a state. I never feel happy walking or cycling along there.

Pleasant setting on the Union Canal with the towpath passing some rolling farmland and former watercress beds. Cross the Sewage Works “pipe bridge”, savour the aroma (heading north) and pass by the inaccessible Springwell Reedbeds. Some original and minor historical remnants, partly obscured along this stretch of the towpath.

Lock 83 on Grand Union canal. Near to Maple Cross and reached via Springwell Lane. Surprisingly rural spot so close to edge of London. Nice bridge to stand and watch the boats moving through the lock. Small car park close by. No other facilities.
