What type of choir do you have and what is the style of music that is typically performed?
We have a community choir called Spirit of Harmony. Our choir is open to anyone who loves to sing, regardless of experience or ability. We perform a variety of music, including pop, gospel, folk, and classical. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all singers.How often do you rehearse and perform, and what are the expectations for choir members?
We rehearse weekly on Monday evenings from 7:00-9:00 PM at the Church of the Holy Redeemer in Acomb, York. We typically perform several times a year, including during the holiday season and in the spring. We expect our choir members to attend rehearsals regularly and to practice at home in order to learn their parts. We also encourage our members to participate in fundraising efforts and to help promote our concerts.What is the cost to join the choir and are there any additional fees for performances or materials?
Our membership fee is £80 per year, payable in two instalments of £40. This covers the cost of sheet music and other materials, as well as venue rental and other administrative costs. There are no additional fees for performances, though we do ask our members to provide their own concert attire.What is the process for auditioning and joining the choir, and what level of experience is required?
We do not require an audition to join our choir. Anyone who loves to sing is welcome to join us at our weekly rehearsals. We do ask that our members commit to attending rehearsals regularly and to practicing at home in order to learn their parts. No prior singing experience is required, though we do ask our members to be willing to learn and to work together as a team.Can you provide references or examples of past performances, and what type of venues does the choir typically perform in?
We have performed at a variety of venues in and around York, including churches, community centres, and outdoor festivals. Some of our past performances have included collaborations with other choirs and musicians, as well as our own concerts featuring a mix of genres and styles. I joined AFO 2 years ago after my old choir closed and I'm so glad I did. They were an absolute lifeline running sessions through lockdown and it's such a joy to be back singing together. I've also learnt a lot about how to sing better as Rachel, the choir Director, is full of helpful tips and techniques. My fellow choir members are also brilliant fun. If you enjoy singing in the car, why not try singing with AFO a go.

I joined AFO at Market Weighton in January 2020.. Precovid 😅what a great decision! It is such a friendly welcoming choir which just allows you to sing from the heart.. No auditions and no pressure to perform at gigs you can be as involved as much as you want to be 😊our choir leader Rachel is such a bundle of fun and so welcoming , motivating and encouraging 🎶you always leave the session on a high 😁the choice of songs is eclectic with favourite hits from childhood to new contemporary songs which are a joy to learn to old traditional favourites particularly at Christmas 🤶the arrangements of the harmonies leave you with Goosebumps. Amazed at the sound we produce 🤩an added bonus is being part of the wider AFO choirs in East Yorkshire which allows us to get together at music events and gigs... So lovely to meet and make new friends all with a common love of singing ❤️

Rachel is a fabulous, very talented coach and choir leader who makes every session fun and uplifting. Very safe, comfortable, friendly, happy environment. User friendly website and members area packed with all you need to know, with super downloadable learning resources to help us practice between sessions. If you're thinking about joining a choir these are the best by far. Family run and they genuinely have the members best interests at the heart of everything they do, working tirelessly to secure amazing performance opportunities such as sharing the stage with Leona Lewis, Russell Watson, Paul Carrack, and supporting local community and fund raising events.
