My amplifier stopped working so I thought I’d give this local place a go. A surly old guy answered the door - I thought fair enough, no customer skills but so long as he does the job... He took my £25 deposit and said to give him a couple of weeks. That was April 27th. I rang him every couple of weeks until end of August. Every time the answer was something vague about how they haven’t found the parts yet. So on Monday 3 September when I rang and was told the same thing I thought enough is enough and politely asked to have my amp back. ‘No you can’t’ he says ‘it’s in pieces’. I said alright when can I get it back. He says end of the week. I call him on Friday he says ‘my engineer’s been sick it’s still in pieces’. I say ok when can I have it back, still perfectly polite. He says end of next week. Ok I phone him the following Friday - again he says no. It’s in his Bromley shop, engineer is ill (still!). Wow. So I ask if I can have it back even if it’s in pieces. He says end of next week. I call him Thursday next week, he says to me, our engineer wasn’t able to deal with you amp, too specialised, so I’ve given it to a guy called Nick who knows how to fix it. Somehow I’m still calm. I say no thank you I just want my amp back. I don’t say what I’m thinking - which is ‘oh my god, after nearly 5 months now you decide to fix it!! Just give me my amp back!!’ So he says to me... you guessed it - end of next week! Actually he didn’t. He said Wednesday next week. So I call him the following Wednesday and he says to me, ‘ah, you’re the guy who doesn’t want his amp fixed!’ Amazing. And of course he’s not in. He says to me come on Friday (end of the week!! You weren’t wrong after all if you’d guessed!). I couldn’t go on Friday. Went by following Monday. Didn’t call. Just saw his shop blind was up and rang the bell. I got my amp back!!! I’m overjoyed. He makes me sign a piece of paper that I’ve received it. I go home and it says on my copy of it. ‘Customer didn’t want his amp fixed’. Thing is I’m so happy to have my amp back I’m laughing now. He kept my deposit of course. Thinks himself wronged by me I’m sure. Meanwhile I’ve had a proper engineer waiting nearly a month since I contacted him about repair. Do I even want to explain to him that the reason I haven’t sent the amp yet is that I plain couldn’t get it back from this place! So anyway there you have it. Take a chance if you like. He did fix a little usb thing for me once. If it’s something simple he’ll probably manage. Otherwise be prepared to pay him a £25 storage fee while he holds on to your equipment for who knows how long.
